Wa PRC Orthography, Wa IPA, and Chinese Pinyin Keyboard for Keyman 6.0 Version 0.9 Copyright © 2004 SOAS, U of London For late-breaking info or updates, visit: http://mercury.soas.ac.uk/wadict INTRODUCTION This keyboard may be used in conjunction with Keyman 6.0 from Tavultesoft for all your special symbol typing needs in typing Wa and Chinese Roman orthographies, including breathy vowels with macrons in Wa PRC romanization, all 11 special IPA symbols used in IPA for Wa, and Chinese pinyin vowels with tone marks. INSTALLATION The Keyman 6.0 program itself may be downloaded for free from: http://www.tavultesoft.com First install Keyman on your computer. During installation, note where you install the program (by default it is "C:\Program Files\Tavultesoft"). Then, if you have not yet downloaded the Wa-Pinyin keyboard package itself, download it now. It is suggested that you place the "wa_py.kmx" Wa keyboard file itself in the Tavultesoft root folder. This is by default "C:\Program Files\Tavultesoft". Then use the Keyman Configuration utility program to install the "Wa-Pinyin" keyboard Windows. See further details in Keyman Help. You are encouraged to link the Wa-Pinyin keyboard with a Windows language keyboard, as explained in the Keyman documentation. For example, link Keyman and the Wa-Pinyin keyboard with the "Afrikaans" language; additionally add the shortcut "hot" key Ctrl+Shift+8, to harmonize with other handy shortcuts: Ctrl+Shift=0 English (United Kingdom) or English (United States) keyboard Ctrl+Shift=9 Chinese (PRC) keyboard Ctrl+Shift=8 Afrikaans (really Wa-Pinyin keyboard) -- includes just a-e-i-o-u with macron) Ctrl+Shift=7 Faeroese (really "Latvian (Wa-1)" keyboard -- includes just a-e-i-o-u with macron) Ctrl+Shift=6 Icelandic (really "U.S. International" keyboard) USAGE This keyboard program may be used for the following: WA Type the macrons used in Wa PRC romanization to indicate breathy vowels by first typing the vowel a/A, e/E, i/I ,o/O, or u/U, followed by the number "1" (note that this is the same as Chinese pinyin "first tone", and is typed in the same manner.) CHINESE PINYIN Type ü and Ü by first typing the " (double quote), then typing u or U. Note: this keyboard is designed to require typing the actual symbol, regardless of where it might appear on a given national keyboard. E.g., in the U.S. the double quote " is usually above the symbol ', but in the U.K. it is usually above the number 2. But if you link the keyboard to the Windows Afrikaans keyboard, as suggested herein, the Afrikaans keyboard has the double-quote " above the ', near the Enter key, so it is that key which you will need to press, regardless of where the symbol appears on your physical keyboard keycaps. Add Chinese pinyin tone marks to letters (as shown in the table below) by first typing a vowel (see above for ü), then typing a number 1-4 immediately after the vowel the tone mark goes over a + 1,2,3,4 --> ā á ǎ à e + 1,2,3,4 --> ē é ě è i + 1,2,3,4 --> ī í ǐ ì o + 1,2,3,4 --> ō ó ǒ ò u + 1,2,3,4 --> ū ú ǔ ù ü + 1,2,3,4 --> ǖ ǘ ǚ ǜ Tones are added to upper case vowel letters in the same way. IPA Type the special IPA symbols used in Wa using the "diacritic" keys left brace "{" (usually), or right-brace "}" (once, with "n") after the letters g,n,?,z,c,n,e,o,u, and O. g + { --> ɡ (U+0261 SCRIPT G) n + } --> ŋ (U+014B ENG) ? + { --> ʔ (U+0294 GLOTTAL STOP) z + { --> ʑ (U+0291 Z WITH CURL) c + { --> ɕ (U+0255 C WITH CURL) n + { --> ɲ (U+0272 N WITH LEFT HOOK) e + { --> ɛ (U+025B OPEN E) o + { --> ɔ (U+0254 OPEN O) u + { --> ɯ (U+026F TURNED M) O + { --> ɤ (U+0264 RAMS HORN) Type the IPA non-spacing diaeresis-below breathy mark by typing the diacritic key "%" following any of the 9 vowel letters. (Note mnemonic help in remembering symbol: per cent sign has two circles, like the two dots in the diaeresis.) vowel + % --> ̤ ( U+0324 COMBINING DIAERESIS BELOW) Rev. 2004.01.13 RAK
