WHAT IS UNIEDIT?
UniEdit is a powerful multilingual editing system in which multiple documents in any combination of languages and character sets may be written and printed. UniEdit is geared toward foreign language learning and the ease of multilingual editing. By incorporating support for Unicode™ 3.1/ISO 10646, the editor combines all of the world's alphabets into one program, making UniEdit truly multilingual.
UniEdit is a by-product of the development at Duke University and the Humanities Computing Lab of a language learning and authoring system for Microsoft Windows, called WinCALIS. UniEdit is the "editor" part of WinCALIS Author, without all the authoring tools, but including all the editing features which make the WinCALIS system easy to use for students and educators alike.
We recently completed a new 32-bit UniEdit v.1.5, which offers many new features (e.g. ability to use all Unicode compliant fonts, exchanging Unicode text on the clipboard with MS Office, superior Internet integration, etc.). See the UniEdit download page for download information or call or e-mail us for information on how to obtain an evaluation copy of the latest version on CD.

EASY TO USE
Microsoft Windows and a friendly user environment allow you to write quickly and easily. The most difficult part of creating a document may be choosing from among the many languages available! UniEdit has all the usual Windows editing features and many innovative ones--a familiar Windows menu arrangement; Cut, Copy, and Paste; Find and Replace (and ignore case in any script); multiple Undo and Redo; Word Wrap; Sort Lines; several modifiable keyboards for each language, with on-screen virtual keyboards to help in finding the right letters; a "Unicode Browser" enabling "point-and-click" selection of any character in the full Unicode 2.0 character set; on-line, user-editable, dictionaries, with automatic indexing; code conversion utilities to and from Unicode and virtually all national and corporate coding standards; Paste As, allowing code conversion to Unicode "on the fly," when pasting from the clipboard; and much more.
MULTILINGUAL
Using two bytes for each character representation (rather than one, as ASCII format uses), 65,536 characters can be represented, allowing UniEdit to be multilingual and international. UniEdit can communicate in just about any language. Presently supporting hundreds of languages, written in more than twenty orthographic scripts (see sample), the open-ended design of UniEdit's WinCALIS technology means the sky's the limit in terms of linguistic capability. For example, UniEdit gives you access to many more Chinese-Japanese-Korean Han characters than any other Windows or Macintosh program available today. And it gives you access not just to the basic Arabic character set, but also to the exotic Arabic script characters used in Berber, Pashto, or Old Malay. The same breadth and depth is true also for Cyrillic, Hebrew, Korean Hangul, and other scripts. We are working in conjunction with our users to develop the necessary fonts, character sets, and keyboards to support even more languages.
HELPFUL
On-line help means you are never more than a mouse-click away from the answer to your question. Complete with commands and menus, the Windows help system is fast and informative. A printed manual includes information on all aspects of the program, including editing, referencing language input, printing, as well as configuring and customizing UniEdit.
UniEdit DLL
You can integrate UniEdit as a dynamic link library (DLL), using your own program as the
calling, host application, thus empowering your program and its users with multilingual
input capabilities.
To find out more about this, proceed to our UniEdit DLL Information page.
Java UniEdit
You can use our Java version of UniEdit to view existing WebCALIS exercises, or other Unicode documents, in all languages, via the Internet. NOTE: This link is out-of-date. We are currently revising and updating Java UniEdit.
