Basic Layout of the Summer Seminar

Week One: Introductory WinCALIS
Welcome to WinCALIS! This course is designed for those with little or no previous experience with WinCALIS. Participants are instructed in the fundamental techniques of Windows and introduced to the basics of WinCALIS authoring. Seminar attendants will complete lessons in WinCALIS, and learn different authoring skills sufficient to produce simple classroom lessons. Specific techniques include producing accents and diacritics, and learning methodology and implementation of various WinAuthor question types. Methods of creating multimedia lessons are explored as well. Hands-on experience is emphasized through demonstration, exercises and one-on-one assistance with trained instructors.

Week Two: Intermediate WinCALIS
Explore with WinCALIS! Tailored to WinCALIS users with some experience, or those with a sufficient knowledge of Windows, this seminar provides a more intensive approach to the WinCALIS environment. This session emphasizes a more involved approach to authoring, treating issues of aesthetics and feedback flexibility through customizing, communicating and WinCALIS script writing. Authors learn how to format lessons for speed and ease of use, and how to create on-line help materials. The use and implementation of multimedia in WinCALIS are also covered. Participants gain experience and proficiency through in-class exercises and interaction with experienced WinCALIS users.

Week Three: Advanced WinCALIS
Fly with WinCALIS! This session, geared towards the experienced WinCALIS author, provides instruction on sophisticated WinCALIS techniques. Users are introduced to more complex features of WinAuthor, including lesson branching, graphic manipulation and response analysis. Specific emphasis will be placed on incorporating advanced WinCALIS functions in the educational medium. Further, participants are introduced to audio and video in the Multimedia Editor, which allow them to bring live action to lessons through Sound Blaster, Video Blaster, Laser disc player or VCR. As in the other sessions, experience is gained through in-class exercises, and through development of WinCALIS authored software with the assistance of experienced WinCALIS users.

11:00-12:00 Microsoft Windows orientation (including hands-on practice with launching applications; mouse pointing and clicking, selecting menu items, clarifying Windows "parts"; using keyboard shortcuts; file manipulation in File Manager)

1:30-3:00 Windows orientation, continued (calling up topics in Help, using applications such as Notepad, Calculator, Paintbrush)
3:00-3:15 Break
3:15-5:00 Enter WinCALIS! Running prepared lessons from "student's point of view", noticing windows, question types, feedback, response analysis, formatting, graphics, audio.
TUESDAY:
9:00-9:30 Question&Answer Session; review previous day's material.
9:30-10:45 Creation through Modeling: Writing the "Manet" lesson. Opening new WinCALIS script, entering Directions, entering Text (article.txt).
10:45-12:00 Creating Multiple Choice Question, entering Anticipated Responses, appropriate Feedback; Saving and Naming Lesson.
12:00-1:30 Lunch
1:30-2:00 Creating True/False Questions, giving Feedback.
2:00-2:30 Discussion: Save, Save As...Drives, Directories, Necessity of backing up.
2:30-3:15 Creating Short Answer Question, including wild card characters in Anticipated Responses. Discuss wild cards and their application, discuss range of response analysis.
3:15-3:30 Break
3:30-5:00 Scripting: constructing individual lessons using authentic material in target language, using elements of WinCALIS discussed thusfar. Preview of next day's plans.
WEDNESDAY:
9:00-9:30 Question&Answer session; Review of previous material.
9:30-10:30 Show&Tell: Sharing of individual lessons
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-12:00 Constructing a Cloze Exercise Question: Entering and Marking text, providing More Anticipated Responses, adjusting Script Options, adding contextual and non-contextual clues.
12:00-1:30 Lunch
1:30-2:30 Scripting: Including a cloze exercise question in individual lessons.
2:30-3:15 Adding Tutorials: Creating a text file of additional lesson information, linking it to the main lesson through the Tutorials feature. Saving, labelling, and naming tutorial files.
3:15-4:15 Graphics! Using Paintbrush to view Graphics. Scripting: adding "manet04.bmp" to the lesson.
4:15-5:00 More Graphics! Opening graphic files in Arts & Letters program. Scripting: placing clip art in individual lessons. Discuss placement of graphics in WinCALIS.
THURSDAY:
9:00-9:30 Question&Answer Session; Review of previous material
9:30-10:45 Screen Aesthetics: Formatting text, Sizing and Placing Windows, Setting the cursor. Enhancing the "manet" lesson with text formatting. Scripting: working on aesthetics and layout of individual lessons.
10:45-11:00 Break
11:00-12:00 Introduction to Multimedia Editor: Looking into audio and video clips, discuss .wav, .avi, and .mmd files in WinCALIS.
12:00-1:30 Lunch
1:30-2:00 Embedding a .wav audio file into the "Manet" lesson.
2:00-3:00 Scripting: Creating .wav files, using SoundMan audio device and Multimedia Editor, grabbing clips from .wav files, implementing audio clips in individual lessons.
3:00-3:15 Break
3:15-4:15 Making and Pushing Buttons! Enhancing "Manet" to include buttons that bring up tutorials, audio clips.
4:15-5:00 Scripting: Including buttons in individual lessons, using the Short Answer question type or the Pass_Through Window.

9:30-10:45 Scripting; catch up as needed
