UniEdit Tryout Edition

NEW! A Web setup for a full-featured evaluation version of the latest UniEdit v.1.5 can be downloaded from here:

UNIED32.EXE (3/25/02 9,828KB).

This download includes editing support for all the languages included in the first four download modules shown below for the previous v.1.3, but it does not include the large on-line dictionary modules for Japanese and Korean. They may be downloaded from the existing links below and installed as directed.

Pricing for this new version remains the same. The regular UniEdit setup on CD includes more extensive documentation, sample documents, and many other extras.

The Web download Setup does not include the Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the UniEdit User's Guide)(PDF 841K). You can either view this file directly in your browser, using the Adobe Acrobat Plug-in, or download it to your own machine for viewing at any time. In order to save the file to your own machine, right-click on the link and select "Save Target As..." (or similar wording).

The UniEdit Tryout Edition is a full-featured "time-locked" version of UniEdit, identical with the regular edition, which may be be used for a tryout period of up to 45 days. It will give you a feel for UniEdit's functionality, especially its user-friendly interfaces for typing in most of the world's languages, support for Unicode/ISO 10646 UCS-2, and powerful ability to exchange data with virtually all other existing coding standards.

To install the UniEdit Tryout Edition, you will need to download at least the first self-extracting archive file below. That is sufficient for all the many left-to-right alphabetic languages which UniEdit supports. (During Setup--see instructions below--be sure to select the Optional Module for the language/script support you require, by clicking on the "Set Options" button.)

In order to have CJK support (for Chinese-Japanese-Korean languages), you will also need to download the second file. (During Setup--see instructions below--be sure to select the Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean Optional Modules, by clicking on the "Set Options" button.)

In order to have support for the "right-to-left script" languages (languages written with Arabic and Hebrew scripts) you will also need to download the third file below. (During Setup--see instructions below--be sure to select the "Arabic script" and/or "Hebrew script" Optional Modules, by clicking on the "Set Options" button.)

In order to have (limited) support for the "Indic scripts", you will also need to download the fourth file below. (During Setup--see instructions below--be sure to select the "Asian Alphabetic scripts" Optional Module, by clicking on the "Set Options" button.)

If you wish to install large on-line dictionaries for Japanese-and-English (105,000 entries) or Korean-and-English (25,000 entries) , then you will also need to download the fourth or fifth file below. (During Setup--see instructions below--be sure to select the "Japanese-English Dictionary" and/or "Korean-English Dictionary" Optional Modules, by clicking on the "Set Options" button.)

Here is how to install the UniEdit Tryout Edition:

  1. Create a temporary directory and download all the desired archive files into it (up to 22MB free space required to hold all archives at once, and 24MB additional free space to hold the extracted Setup files).
  2. Extract each archive to the same or a different temporary directory, by double-clicking on the filename in the Windows Explorer; or by typing "uniedtry" in the Windows Start,Run line, and also (as needed) "cjkmod", "r2lmod", "indmod", "jpnengdc", and "krnengdc". While extracting the files from the archive for one or another optional module, you may occasionally be warned that you are going to overwrite an existing file. This is normal. Answer always, yes, or no as you please--it does not matter.
  3. After extracting the Setup files from a downloaded archive, you may delete the archive, to conserve disk space.
  4. In the Windows Start menu, click on "Run" and type "setup" (browsing to or prefixing the path to your temporary installation subdirectory.) You will then have a chance to select the directory in which to install your tryout copy of UniEdit. A full setup requires up to 70MB of disk space. Choose a different directory from the temporary directory containing the Setup files.
  5. After Setup has completed, all the files in the temporary directory and its subdirectories can be deleted.

To run UniEdit, click on the icon created by the Setup program. If you did not see a message that Setup completed successfully, please see the document Frequently Asked Questions for help.

Once you download UNIEDTRY and any other optional modules, you may get further details on installing UniEdit from UNI_INST.PDF, a three-page Portable Document Format .PDF file.

The UniEdit User's Guide, full documentation for the UniEdit program, is available as an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format .PDF file, along with other Supplementary Files, in the download directory.
If, after you have installed and tried out the UniEdit Tryout Edition, you wish to uninstall it, click on the "UniEdit 1.x Readme" icon and follow the instructions there.
